Vocal technique, exercises, tips and relevant resources
Doctor Dolittle, created by Hugh Lofting, is a beloved fictional character known for his ability to communicate with animals. In addition to his adventures, Doctor Dolittle is known for his singing in the 1967 film adaptation. Rex Harrison, who played the title role in the movie, known as an extraordinary actor with a unique style of singing.
Harrison was a master of a "talk-singing" technique. Instead of using a traditional singing voice, he recited lyrics in a conversational tone, which is a perfect fit for the Doctor Dolittle’s character. This approach might seem effortless, but it requires vocal stamina and a strict mastery of breath support. This is something that every aspiring singer can learn and incorporate into their practice.
If you want to emulate Harrison's style of singing reminiscent of talk-singing, start by practicing speaking and singing simultaneously. One technique you can use to practice this technique is called "recitative," which involves speaking at different pitches while maintaining a rhythmic flow.
